There’s little doubt that this Halloween will be unlike any we’ve ever known. In fact, about 40% of Americans believe that COVID-19 will affect how they celebrate Halloween this year. But that doesn’t mean you can’t find ways to still enjoy this beloved holiday, especially if you aren’t among the 23% of parents planning to take their children trick-or-treating.
The CDC has offered guidelines for families on how to safely celebrate Halloween. Some of the low-risk suggestions to do this year include:
Carving or decorating pumpkins either with members of your household or with neighbors or friends, outside and at a safe distance
Decorating your home
Doing an outdoor Halloween scavenger hunt
Having a virtual Halloween costume contest
Having a Halloween movie night with members of your household
If you are searching for some additional ways to celebrate safely with your favorite little ghosts and goblins, Alamance Achieves has some suggestions for local events happening in our community that offer spooky fun that’s safe and socially distant.

A final safety note: Do not use costume masks in place of cloth masks. A Halloween costume mask is not a substitute for a cloth mask unless it is made of two or more layers of breathable fabric that covers your mouth and nose and doesn’t leave gaps around your face. You or your children should also not wear a costume mask over a cloth mask. This can be dangerous if the costume mask makes it hard to breathe. Instead, consider using a Halloween-themed cloth mask.
